In the same era of Russia as Glinka, there was this amazing guitar composer! The guitar was originally a seven-stringed instrument of a different kind, but with the Russian Revolution, it was replaced by the more common six-stringed instrument. However, during the Czarist period, the seven-string guitar had a long history of masterful use, and many effective works were created that were uniquely Russian. Vladimir Molkov (1801-1864) is almost forgotten today, but in his lifetime he was an important guitar virtuoso, composer, critic, and educator, and was the first disciple of the seven-string virtuoso Andrei Shifra, a close friend of Glinka and Dargomyzhsky. He was a close friend of Glinka and Dargomyzhsky, and wrote many arrangements of their original works as well as many others. He arranged many of his own original works as well as many arrangements for seven-string guitar, including Carcassi's and Sol's six-string works for seven-string, and was the first in Russia at the time to arrange Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" for two guitars, a Western Baroque work. One of Morkov's most notable achievements is his use of a seven-string guitar and a small, high-pitched quartz guitar as a duet, and the tremendous effect of this arrangement deserves greater recognition.Oleg Timofeyev was born in Moscow and is now based in the United States.
