LEIF OVE ANDSNES; BERGEN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA & EDWARD GAR

Description:

Ansnes is the soloist for the piano concerto on the new album recording celebrating Voslef's 80th year as one of Norway's leading contemporary music composers! Shetyr Voslef is a prolific composer who was born in Bergen and taught for many years at the Grieg Academy in Bergen. This album celebrates Voslef's 80th birthday. The album features a solo by pianist Raif Ove Ansnes (1970-), who was born in Karmøy, Rogaland, and studied with Izy Hlinka at the Grieg Academy, and a performance by the Bergen Philharmonic, which has maintained a close relationship with Voslef. Vosleff heard Mozart's "Concerto for Two Pianos" and was inspired to compose the "Echo Concerto" by the idea of "instruments playing side by side and sounding exactly the same. The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, which commissioned the work, premiered it at the beginning of its 1993 season, with Ansnes as soloist and Alexander Dmitriev conducting.Ansnes said that Vosleff "could not have found anyone who could play this work, which relies on extreme precision to the point of mania, as well as Ansnes did" when Ansnes performed it at the Bergen Philharmonic's April 1995 concert.August 2019, Principal This recording is from a session conducted by conductor Edward Gardner. The "Dream Play" for orchestra was commissioned by Ivin Gullberg Jensen, the newly appointed chief conductor of the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra (now the NDR Erbphilharmonie), who commissioned Voslef to conduct him in his first concert. Based on Swedish playwright August Strindberg's "Dream Play," a play about the episode in which the daughter of the Hindu god Indra descends to earth, the piece was composed with Strindberg's words "imitating the form of a dream in which time and space do not exist and in which there is no context" in mind. The recording was made live at a concert Gullberg Jensen conducted with the Bergen Philharmonic in May 2011.Barabbas", an orchestral work intended as a "Opera without singers", is based on Vosleff's opera of the same name. The work tells the story of Barabbas, a bandit released on behalf of Jesus Christ, and is performed with excerpts from the opera's libretto on a display above the podium. Conducted by Spain's Juanjo Mena (1965-), the first guest conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic, this is a live recording of a concert at Grieg Hall in May 2013. King International.
