Live performance of Busoni's Piano Concerto with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, of which he was the chief conductor! The concerto is a 70-minute long work in five movements, and in addition to the terrific virtuosity of the solo piano, the orchestra is also extremely massive, and even a male chorus appears in the final movement. The magnificent solo performance by Scarpini, a great Italian pianist who studied with Casella and Hindemith and was also active as a composer, is not to be missed. He has an excellent memory and is said to have played this live performance from memory. He is a pianist whose performances are rarely heard, and the only other recording he has made is with Furtwängler. This is a very valuable recording. King International
