In March 1884, Dvořák visited England for the first time and conducted his "Stabat Mater" to great acclaim. In the fall of the same year, Dvořák visited England again to perform "Stabat Mater," and the relationship between Dvořák and England grew stronger until he was commissioned to write a choral work for the Leeds Music Festival in 1886. Dvořák's choice of subject matter for this work was the real-life saint "Ludmilla of Bohemia," who lived in the late 9th century. She was the wife of King Bořivoj I, who unified the Czech Republic, and was a patroness of Czech Catholics who was instrumental in the state's acceptance of Greek Orthodoxy and the conversion of its people. Dvořák adapted her story into a magnificent oratorio from a libretto by the poet Jaroslav Wulfritsky, which he performed in London to great acclaim.
