The sixth collection in Leonard Slatkin's "Ravel: Orchestral Works" series includes two long-awaited piano concertos and the "Tzigane. The "Piano Concerto in G major," which makes extensive use of jazz-like rhythms, is filled with vibrant sounds from the beginning, and the piano plays brilliantly against the backdrop of a slow-moving orchestra. The "Piano Concerto for Left Hand," composed for Wittgenstein, who lost his right hand in the war, is a work that makes full use of superb technique, and is also characterized by a variety of sounds in which percussion plays an important role. Dumont, the soloist, is an up-and-coming pianist born in 1985. He studied under Bruno Ligut at the Paris Conservatory and has won numerous prizes at competitions. The violinist in the oriental-inspired "Tzigane" is Jennifer Gilbert, a female violinist who has visited Japan before. Her powerful tone is very attractive.
