The seventh recording by Japanese musicians on the French label OCORA is a CD by a quartet called "Hogaku Quartet. The performance of this group, all members of which are graduates of the Department of Traditional Japanese Music at Tokyo University of the Arts, is different from the previous ones in that it explores new horizons while preserving the teachings of its predecessors. Of particular note is the coupling of contemporary works, a first for OCORA, which specializes in so-called folk music in addition to traditional Japanese repertoire. This CD, which also includes Toshi Ichiyanagi's "Flower Transformation," which the Hogaku Quartet was closely taught by the composer himself, is a remarkable piece that both reaffirms tradition and suggests new traditions for the future. ---- Yasuaki Itakura(Producer)This quartet was formed in the spring of 2011 by graduates of the Department of Traditional Japanese Music at Tokyo University of the Arts.
