He was born in Latvia in 1919 and studied in Paris under Messiaen and Tony Aubin. After winning several prizes as a composer, he immigrated to Canada in 1951 and devoted himself to the country's musical development as an educator. Perhaps because he believed as a young man that chamber music was the highest form of art, Keninsh did not turn his hand to symphonic composition until 1959. However, from the 1970s to the 1980s, he produced a series of symphonies, and is now recognized as \"Latvia's leading symphonic composer. This album contains two relatively compact symphonies from the 1970s. Symphony No. 4\" has a delicate and rich French sound, and \"Symphony No. 6\" has an impressive structure with many fugues. Both are works that stand out for their expert style. The concerto-style \"Canzona Sonata\" also demonstrates Keninsh's excellent compositional technique, and the deep viola tone is fully utilized.
