Welsh soprano Natalia Romaniu takes us on a Slavic journey. She has selected beautiful songs from composers in and around her Ukrainian roots and has created an album dedicated to her grandfather, who lives in Ukraine. The centerpiece of the album is Dvorak's "Love Songs. It is the original of the string quartet "Cypress," a sweet, nostalgic melody born of young Dvořák's painful heartbreak. Here we can see the Czech tradition being carried on, with Dvořák's skillful use of folk songs influencing Janácek, and Moravian folk songs, which Janácek was fascinated by, influencing Novák. Also selected from Russian songs are the mysterious and operatic Rimsky-Korsakov, the passion-filled Tchaikovsky, and the elaborately finished Rachmaninoff. Naxos Japan
