Halli Armas has long been the principal bassoonist of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and is one of Finland's most acclaimed orchestral players. He is also known as a composer whose works include four symphonies, eight concertos, and numerous wind pieces. Many of the organ pieces on this album were written for Jan Lehetra, one of Finland's most renowned organists, with whom he has performed several times in concert with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and with whom he has formed a friendship. His early works, "Chorales and Fughetta," show the influence of Ligeti and Shostakovich, whom he was fascinated by in his youth, but he gradually developed his own style, and his recent works are written in an interesting style using material from twelve-tone and folk songs.
