The Vienna Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1900 as the "Vienna Performing Society Orchestra" and boasts a long history of more than 100 years. The orchestra's first recording of Beethoven's complete symphonies was undertaken by Philippe Jordan, who became chief conductor in 2014; the complete works were recorded during the spring and summer of 2017, and these were released one by one every six months. As in the past, this release will be accompanied by a commentary (with Japanese translation) by Walter Weidlinger. Weidlinger provides a detailed commentary on the two works entitled "Freedom and Salvation," and at the same time introduces the listener to the way Jordan perceives and approaches each work. In Symphony No. 6, Beethoven depicted "memories of country life," not country life itself," says Jordan. It is also "the most colorful symphony of all, with Schubertian elements.
