Description:
The Vienna Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1900 as the "Vienna Performing Society Orchestra" and boasts a long history of more than 100 years. The orchestra's first recording of Beethoven's complete symphonies was undertaken by Philippe Jordan, who became chief conductor in 2014; the complete works were recorded during the spring and summer of 2017, and these were released one by one every six months. As in the past, this release will be accompanied by a commentary (with Japanese translation) by Walter Weidlinger. Weidlinger provides a detailed commentary on the two works entitled "Freedom and Salvation," and at the same time introduces the listener to the way Jordan perceives and approaches each work. In Symphony No. 6, Beethoven depicted "memories of country life," not country life itself," says Jordan. It is also "the most colorful symphony of all, with Schubertian elements. True to his word, Jordaan beautifully and expressively builds the piece from the sunny mood of arriving in the countryside, to the sound of babbling streams and cuckoos, to the simple dances of the people, through the threats of nature, to their gratitude to God.The finale "enhances the finale of the Fifth by its serenity, its solemn strokes, and its abandonment of all development. This movement rests solemnly in itself and shines in every possible variation. Beethoven's pantheism here already contains the idea of No. 9's 'all men shall be brothers.'" I believe that this is the case. of the relatively small and light Symphony No. 8, "Compositionally, it's perfectly in line with what Beethoven would have been proud of." Jordan says. Everything here is precisely on point, and the entire symphony is highly virtuosic, full of wit and surprises, rhythmically, harmonically, and dynamically. This is an exceptionally compact and brilliant work. Recorded in the rich acoustics of the Musikverein's Great Hall, Jordan's philosophy for each piece is carefully reflected in the performance. The accompanying Japanese-language commentary will further deepen your understanding of each piece and Jordán's interpretation. Naxos Japan
