On June 8, 1807, the cornerstone of a new Lutheran church was laid in the German city of Karlsruhe, and a grand celebration was held when the church was completed in 1816. In 2016, 100 years after the completion of the church, two important occasions were celebrated with a performance of "Psalms" by Danzi and Fesca, two composers with close ties to Karlsruhe. Danzi had been music director of the Karlsruhe Court Orchestra since 1812, and Fesca was a member of that orchestra. Danzi's works have a neat style reminiscent of Mozart's in the 18th century tradition, while Fesca's works are more Romantic in style, with gorgeous, long-lasting melodies sung with great eloquence. This is an interesting selection that makes one aware of the dramatic changes in musical styles that took place during the 10 years it took to complete the church.
