Bursting with the primal energy of the Amazon! Ballet music by his son, Vakhtang Kahize (1959-), the son of Jansk Kahize, studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory with Sidelnikov and Denisov, and has been the principal conductor of the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra since 2002, following in the footsteps of his father. The Piano Concerto was composed in 1980 during his fourth year at the Moscow Conservatory and won first prize at the Soviet Union Young Composers Competition, and this recording features a revised version of the orchestration from 1991. This recording shows a style that combines Caucasian energy and fervor with a meditative, new-agey, beautiful melody reminiscent of Kancheli's. Kahize's virtuosity is also evident. Kahise's virtuosity also shines through. The symphonic suite "Amazon" is an excerpt from ballet music composed in 1988-89. The music is not avant-garde, but has a wide dynamic range, from deep strings in the style of film music to the intensity of world music, making it ideal for audio checks.
