199957635660
Charles Lloyd - Sangam & Friends - Import Vinyl LP Record Limited Edition

A new album from jazz legend Charles Lloyd—who, at 88, remains active on the front lines of the scene—marking his first release in a year. This album centers on recordings made in February 2009 in Mumbai, India, by Lloyd’s trio “Sangam,” featuring Zakir Hussain (tabla) and Eric Harland (drums). Lloyd, who was invited to perform at “Abbaji”—a concert dedicated to Hussain’s father, Ala Rakha—was deeply inspired by his first visit to India. After the concert, Lloyd, along with Hussain and Harland, proceeded to record at Nirvana Studios in Mumbai. Although the recordings remained unfinished at the time, they were eventually completed as an album more than 15 years later, following the addition of recordings by prominent local musicians such as Vijaya Prakash (vocals) and Rakesh Chaurasia (bansuri), as well as additional sessions in California. The first lead single, “Jai Ganga,” is a track featuring only the three members of Sangam; it leaves a vivid impression with its bright, rhythmic sound and the striking contrast between the virtuosic playing of Hussein and Harland and Lloyd’s light-footed style.
