Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), based in Milan and Rome from the end of the 15th century to the 16th century, was an engineer in addition to an artist, and brought about the heyday of the Renaissance. He was a typical "jack-of-all-trades" of the Renaissance, whose paintings, including the famous "Mona Lisa," were painted with the oil painting technique, and even "The Last Supper," a mural painted with the oil painting technique, shows the composition and tense expression of the apostles in perspective. He also had a side as a scientist and civil architect, and conceived of submarines, airplanes, helicopters, and tanks, as well as dissected human bodies. He is also said to have been an accomplished musician who played the lira, a musical instrument he developed. Although he anticipated ideas, the music of his time was increasingly marked by an intellectual energy that hovered between the sacred and the secular, combining sacred worship with the elaborate musical sophistication of courtly culture. 1500-1600 music was developed by the Flemish school of music.Unique polyphonic vocal works were composed, ranging from Latin lyrics in sacred churches, such as motets, to madrigals in each native language, even those with love and erotic content. Composers of the Flemish school (Dufay, Banschois, Okeghem, etc.) traveled throughout Europe, sharing their works with artists in other countries, and their music continued to develop. The development of printing technology during this period and the distribution of various types of sheet music were also important musical developments. This CD contains a variety of works developed during da Vinci's time, performed by David Munroe, the Hilliard Ensemble, and the Ensemble Gilles Banschois, all of whom are specialists in the music of this period.
