Description:

French-style No. 4, the well-rounded No. 5, and the brilliant Tchaikovsky symphonies from a 1950s Tchaikovsky album, recorded by Decca in Hamburg and Paris. Two symphonies are on CD for the first time. The supple, beautifully proportioned 1952 monaural recording of Symphony No. 5 was his debut recording with the North German (Hamburg) Radio Symphony Orchestra, founded by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt. The other recordings are performances with a French character especially suited to Tchaikovsky's brilliant orchestration. Albert Wolff began recording for Decca in 1951 and continued to make albums of French and Russian music, while Carl Schuricht was then a welcome guest conductor of the Orchestre de la Musique de Paris.
