He is said to have been praised by the old Haydn as \"the most honest, the most courteous, and the most brilliant of all composers. He wrote nearly 20 piano concertos and many piano sonatas. His skill on the piano was so great that John Broadwood, a London piano maker and friend, even added an octave to his piano for him. Steyer used an instrument manufactured in 1806 for this recording, and the Concerto Cologne is accompanied by a strutting accompaniment. Although his music is sometimes regarded as lacking in depth, it is quite good when heard in this way, and it is understandable that the audience of the time was enthusiastic about it.
