The five works selected for this year's concert also feature a rich array of personalities, from the RCO's two resident composers, Granato and Reinfoss, to well-known names such as MacMillan and Saariaho, as well as the already remarkable achievements of Stenz, Robertson, and Brabbins in this genre, The lineup is led by Steenz, Robertson, Brabbins, and Marchchi, all of whom have already made remarkable achievements in this genre. The first piece on the album is an orchestration by MacMillan, himself a devout Catholic who has composed much religious music, subtitled \"Motet for Chorus and Ensemble Based on an Unknown Antiphona from the 14th Century Court of Cyprus. Also noteworthy is the participation of the Huelgas Ensemble, led by Paul van Nevel, a group of specialists in medieval religious music. Granato's piece, subtitled Adagio for Large Orchestra, was the precursor to his own opera Solaris, based on the famous novel by Stanislaw Lem, which inspired filmmakers Andrei Tarkovsky and Steven Soderbergh. Born in 1944 in Terneisen, southwestern Holland, de Vries' \"Providence\" was inspired by Alain Resnais' 1977 film of the same name, and, like the film, is a complex work of recollection, prophecy, anticipation, and realization. Both works, conducted by Susanna Marucki, were commissioned for the circular concert hall, once a gasworks, and were recorded live at their world premiere at the Holland Music Festival. Each of these pieces is unique in its sound effects with the structure of the building in mind, but Reinfoss' piece is unique in that each of the more than a dozen percussionists in the percussion section forms the \"surround effect\" of the movement of the clock. European musician Richard Reinfoss was born in Tilburg, North Brabant, the Netherlands, in 1964. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague under Brian Ferneyhough and Jan van Fraemen, and was greatly influenced by his friendship with Morton Feldman and John Cage, for whom he received the prestigious Matejs Vermeulen Award.
