The four cantatas on this release were composed in Mühlhausen in 1707 and 1708, and are the most ambitious works by a young Bach in his early twenties. Bach's early church cantatas are steeped in the traditions of the 17th century. The influence of his German predecessors Buxtehude and Pachelbel, as well as Italian and French influences, is also evident. Also characteristic of the early period is the experimental and complex treatment of a very wide range of instruments and the enjoyment of sophisticated polyphonic sound effects.
