This is a highly anticipated release, as Vänskä has released many masterpieces by Beethoven, Sibelius, and others. Vänskä was appointed music director of the Minnesota Orchestra in 2003, and has built up a reputation for his Beethoven symphony cycles. However, labor-management conflicts at the orchestra intensified due to deteriorating management, and in October 2012, the management decided to lock out the orchestra.The 2012/13 season was cancelled, and the very survival of the orchestra was in jeopardy. Vänskä returned to the position of Chief Conductor in January 2014 after an agreement was reached between labor and management, and since then, the Minnesota Orchestra's performances have become even denser and more cohesive.
