Many avid Wagnerians may already own the 3-CD set that was released. In the 4-CD set released this time, the lengthy first act is divided into two discs, but the later acts are recorded on each CD. This is a welcome relief from the stress of having the music interrupted in each act.\n\nThe poor sound quality and many missing discs of this performance had been circulating, prompting calls for a complete version with better sound quality, which has finally become available. The source this time is a 16-inch aluminum lacquer-coated disc kept by noted collector Robert Fazzio, and the sound source was taken from a signal broadcast from NBC's flagship station WJZ AM in New York City. The disc was produced at 33.3 RPM using two turntables, so the music was recorded without interruption. Although the disc was in surprisingly good condition, there are three major flaws in the recording. These are a lack of high frequencies, abrupt noise from radio noise, and sound distortion at the end of each side.Also, in a short section beginning at about 6 minutes into CD 2, a disturbing sound can be heard by someone transmitting Morse code.\n\nThe conductor is changed in the middle of the performance, but Bodanzky was not feeling well, and under the direction of his doctor, he conducted only the first and third acts, and was replaced in the second act by Erich Reinsdorf, his assistant at the time. This is a rare recording in which the golden combination of Melchior and Flagstadt can be heard singing. It is a demanding role that requires a great deal of vocal effort, but the singers' singing is superb, with no strain and even a sense of composure. The same is true of the other singers, and the two conductors, the traditional Bodanzky and the young Reinsdorf, provide a propulsive musical performance. Sound quality aside, the performances, which do not sound old at all, can be considered modern.
