Newly mastered.\n\nThese recordings were made in Berlin and elsewhere in a concentrated sequence between 1974 and 1975 as part of a series devoted to piano teaching material, alongside works by Burgmüller, Czerny and Beyer. Apart from a few pieces that appeared on compilations, there is no evidence that the recordings were ever issued abroad as LPs in their original album form: they appear to have been released only in Japan, as a project aimed at Japanese piano students. As no overseas sleeve exists, this reissue uses the artwork of the original Japanese LP release. Moreover, since the original analogue master tapes for the Mendelssohn could not be located at Emil Berliner Studios in Germany, the masters held in Japan have been used, and a new mastering has been carried out for this release.\n\nSpeaking of the teaching series, Eschenbach said that even the Beyer and Czerny pieces used in daily practice are each of them wonderful, and that his great aim was to help players \"understand that music properly and enjoy playing it\". Of all the recordings in the series, it is this set of the Songs Without Words, with their beautiful melodies, that has been most warmly praised since release as music to be listened to for its own sake. In recent years the pieces have more often appeared singly rather than as the complete 48, which makes this two-disc complete edition, restored with its original sleeve design, especially valuable. The individual notes on all 48 pieces from the original booklet are also included here.\n\nEschenbach's playing goes far beyond mere accuracy to the score: he has a real gift for shaping a melodic line, and the true worth of the music emerges. He is a pianist with the ability to lift these pieces to genuine artistic heights rather than simply to demonstrate them.\n\nThis reissue uses the original Japanese sleeve design, and the booklet carries a newly written introductory essay by Shinnosuke Nagai.
