The film directed by Visconti left an even deeper impression thanks to the effective use of Mahler’s “Adagietto,” and it continues to enjoy legendary popularity to this day. This opera by Britten (1913–1976) is based on the same source material, but by revealing different facets of the story than Visconti’s interpretation, it creates a world uniquely its own. The soundscape is more detached, and the production offers a striking perspective that stands in stark contrast to the decadent beauty of Visconti’s film. Tazio, the “symbol of beauty,” is portrayed by a silent dancer, which serves to highlight his innocence. The more fantastical the stage setting, the more this story highlights humanity’s “yearning for beauty” and, in equal measure, the “ugly aspects of reality.” Director Deborah Warner employs simple sets and costumes, as if attempting to distance herself from the anguish of an artist writhing in a fleeting dream. John Graham-Hale, who sings the title role, studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Cambridge and is a tenor who has garnered attention, having won Italy’s prestigious “Franco Avviati Prize” in 2012. His powerful, lyrical voice promises a bright future. Andrew Shore, a veteran British singer capable of tackling a wide variety of roles, is considered the face of English National Opera.\n\n\u003cdeborah warner\u003e\nBorn in Oxfordshire, England, in 1959.
