After Ukraine's independence in 1991, he became a leading figure in the country's music scene, serving as artistic director of the Kiev Music Festival and as professor of composition at the Kiev Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he taught younger students and made numerous accomplishments. His style is influenced by Mahler, Shostakovich, and Shchedrin, while skillfully incorporating the characteristics of his country's folk music. This concerto for three orchestras is a straightforward example of his charm. For his not-so-long life of 57 years, his compatriot Silvestrov (1937-) wrote two memorials...an intimate conversation between two friends using sketches by Karabits, and especially the tender and enveloping \"Farewell Serenade The moderato part of the \"Farewell Serenade\" is impossible to listen to without tears.
