This album contains No. 7 for double bass and No. 8 for bassoon. Of course, it is slightly difficult and one must confront it with one's whole being in order to capture the entirety of the piece. There is a thread of tension in every passage, yet, as is the composer's wont, once one hears the occasional sweet sound, it is hard to leave. The concerto for bassoon begins with an impatient tone pattern, but once the soloist begins, the music transforms into something more gentle. It is a mysterious and fascinating piece of music. Track 6 was written to celebrate both Maxwell Davies' 60th birthday and the 21st anniversary of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.Eventually, the quieter mood of the first movement returns, but the piece closes on a lively note.
