A moving performance of Bach's masterpiece "Mass in B minor" given even more power! The 2023 season marks the 50th anniversary of Neumeier and the Hamburg Ballet. The 2023 season marks the 50th anniversary of Neumeier and the company, and the new work "Donna Nobis Pacem (Give Us Peace)" presented during this memorable season will be released on video. This footage was recorded on December 8 & 9, 2022. This was the week of the world premiere of the film, and normally filming would not be allowed in order to concentrate on the performance, but for the first time, it was allowed. Despite being the premiere of a new work, it was performed with outstanding quality, demonstrating once again the high level of technical ability, expressiveness, and spirituality of the Hamburg Ballet. This work, "Donna Nobis Perchem," was inspired by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The title is taken from the Latin "Dona Nobis Pacem," the final piece of Bach's great work "Mass in B minor. The choreography includes references to "Imagine" by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and a poem (by German poet Günter Kuehnert) about the "Stone of the Human Shadow," said to be the human remains left by the heat rays from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Neumeier visited the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima during his first Japan tour in 1986, and also visited the Peace Memorial Museum.It is also a prayer for world peace in the face of the suffering that has rocked humanity since February 24, 2022, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
