Carlos Salzedo (Salcedo) (1885-1961) was born in France, studied at the conservatories of Bordeaux and Paris, and was invited by Toscanini in 1909 to become principal harpist at the Metropolitan Opera.As a virtuoso himself, he dramatically developed modern harp techniques and effects, and left behind many fascinating harp pieces and arrangements based on them. His harp music is therefore full of technicalities and difficulties that require a large hand extension. The arrangements of carols were mainly made during the Christmas season of 1954-5, and "Let Us Decorate the Cherry Trees," "The Fir Tree," and "The Son of God Tonight" were made into brilliant variations.
