This historical fiction about Queen Elizabeth I depicts the feud over power in the court and the conflicts between the queen's duties as monarch and her feelings as a woman, based on the much-popular libretto by Leone Tottura, written by Walter Scott. Although the opera had a successful premiere, it was forgotten until the latter half of the 20th century. This performance is a revival of the first draft version, based on a careful study of Donizetti's draft by the musicologist Schiavotti. Under the dynamic musical direction of master musician Fritza, Jessica Pratt (winner of the 2013 \"Ciola d'Oro (Golden Swallow)\" award) sang the role of Elisabetta with a majestic voice and a commanding stage presence that was truly that of a queen. In contrast, veteran diva Carmela Remigio sings Amelia, the queen's love rival, with great emotion, supported by a full complement of male singers. The stage design and costumes are also a highlight of the production, richly evocative of the original 16th-century setting.
