Lindisfarne is a historic tidal island located off the coast of Northumberland in northeastern England. It can only be reached via the causeway at low tide and is cut off from the mainland by the sea twice a day at high tide. It is known for the ruins of an ancient monastery and a castle, and is also renowned as the birthplace of Christianity in Northern England. The music was composed by British saxophonist and composer Christian Forshaw. He has collaborated with artists such as Brian Eno and Hugh Jackman, and his music blends elements of folk, classical, sacred, and contemporary music. On this album, Forshaw performs and multi-tracks pieces originally written for saxophone and vocals, adding multiple instruments to the mix. At the heart of the album is the radiant voice of soprano Grace Davidson, known as “the world’s most famous unknown voice” (who has appeared in *Hamlet* and *The Lord of the Rings Live*). The lyrics draw on both original and existing texts; of particular note is “Tale of the Leiden Riddle,” which incorporates “The Leiden Riddle”—one of the oldest surviving examples of the Northumbrian dialect.
