The premiere version of the opera was re-staged at La Scala to commemorate the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Japan! The premiere version of Puccini's opera "Madama Butterfly" opened the 2016/2017 season at La Scala in Milan. During the premiere, the audience booed and the performance of this version was cut short after one performance. Later, Puccini rewrote the opera in three acts instead of two, and the revised version became the famous "Madama Butterfly" as we know it today. It had been 112 years since the first version was performed at La Scala. According to Chailly, "The omission of the aria in two acts in the original version, in which Pinkerton sings of his regrets, creates a more brutal drama."
