Philharmonie Festiva conducted by Gerd Schaller, the Philharmonie Festiva has garnered much attention for its series of Beethoven's "Heroes" and the No. 4 & No. 7 Bruckner symphonies. In addition to the popular Bruckner series, the duo has been performing Beethoven's symphonies from No. 3 to No. 8 since the early summer of 2013, and their phenomenal performances have received a tremendous response. The three symphonies on the Profil CD release, "Heroes," No. 4, and No. 7, are from live recordings of these concerts. Recently, it has become common practice to perform Beethoven's symphonies in period style and to use contemporary instruments that reflect the period in which they were composed, but Schaller's focus here was to "employ a performance venue with acoustics and atmosphere. Of the three symphonies on the album, the third and fourth symphonies were premiered in private performances at the Count Lopkowitz residence in Vienna in 1804 and 1807, respectively, prior to their public premieres. Schaller's Beethoven Series follows this tradition by performing in the "Emperor's Room of the Abbey of Ebraha", a historical building of moderate size (10m high ceiling, 12.75m wide x 26.5m deep) with a volume similar to the hall of the Palais Lopkowitz, with a relatively small ensemble of approximately 35 musicians, which was common in Beethoven's time.
