György Vaschhage, a Hungarian genius, and his Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir have attracted attention by reviving and presenting to the world numerous unknown French Baroque works that had been neglected until the end of the 20th century. This album features "Scylla and Glaucus," the only musical tragedy left by Jean-Marie Leclerc, the master of 18th century French violin music, also known as the "French Corelli. Leclerc studied under Giovanni Battista Somis, a great violinist in the lineage of Corelli, and was one of the first to establish his own unique violin art in France, establishing a high reputation as a performer and composer.Known for his instrumental works such as sonatas for violin, concertos, and trio sonatas, Leclerc wrote his only musical tragedy, "Scylla and Glaucus," as a wedding gift for Louis XV's crown prince, the witch Kirke, who falls in love with Glaucus, the sea god who has feelings for the beautiful sea nymph Scylla, Glaucus rejects her and places a terrible curse on her rival Scylla in this lyric tragedy in a prologue and five acts. Vaschhage and his hand-picked Orfeo Orchestra & Purcell Choir, along with a stellar cast of singers, will rediscover the charm of this little-known work.
