A collection of works for bassoon by two internationally renowned contemporary Finnish composers. Sebastian Fagerlund studied at the Sibelius Academy and has composed mainly orchestral, chamber, and instrumental music. He also began composing for voice, and in 2009 published the opera \"Debern\" (BISSA 1780). His works are characterized by \"a combination of spiky rhythms and long, slow arcing melodies, with a solid sound and rich colors,\" and are said to oppose the rigid methods of modernism. Concertos are one of the genres he continues to work in. Following the Clarinet Concerto (BIS SA 1707), Saxophone Concerto (Jase), and Violin Concerto \"Darkness in the Light\" (BIS SA 2093), he wrote the Bassoon Concerto, which in Swedish suggests \"evocation\" and in Finnish \"death and exorcism\" and in Polynesian culture In Polynesian culture, it is called \"Mana\", which means \"invisible, supernatural power\".The work was co-commissioned by the Gothenburg and Lahti Symphony Orchestras and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. The \"Woodland\" for bassoon solo was written prior to the concerto. It is inspired by the \"Mysterious Realm. Like the concerto, it was intended to be performed by Bram van Sumbeke. Bram van Sumbeke (1980-) is a Dutch player who was principal of the Rotterdam Philharmonic from 2002 to 2011, and since 2015 has been teaching at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague while guesting as principal with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, among others. In 2011 he was awarded the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Prize and joined the Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center in New York. Kalevi Aho's Bassoon Concerto was written for solo bassoonist Bentse Bogani of the Helsinki Philharmonic. The concerto consists of \"Andante,\" \"Vivace,\" \"Passacaglia (Adagio) e Cadenza,\" and \"Presto. Solo V was composed for Harri Ahamas, soloist of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. The music is dramatic in character, using the highest and lowest registers of the bassoon; the two concertos were performed by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. Aho's concerto was conducted by Dima Slobodenyuk, who succeeded Okko Kam as chief conductor in 2016. Slobodenyuk was born in Russia. She studied at the Sibelius Academy with Segerstam and Jorma Panula. Her recordings of Fagerlund's orchestral works (BIS SA 1707) with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Matvejev's Cello Concerto and Linkola's Piano Concerto (ABCD 364) with the Turku Philharmonic are also highly regarded.
