Description:
Finnish mezzo-soprano Melis Jätinen sings Nordic composers fascinated by French Impressionism Finnish mezzo-soprano Melis Jätinen was born and raised in Finland to a Finnish father and Turkish mother. She studied voice at the Norwegian National College of Music and continued her studies under Marjut Hannula at the Sibelius Academy of the Arts in Helsinki, where she completed her master's degree in 2009. She has performed Mozart and Handel operas at the Finnish National Opera, while pursuing a career in chamber music and song. Impressions of the North" is her solo debut album. Against the backdrop of her interest in the art and music of Impressionism, "with its subtly nuanced color palette and endless possibilities for harmonic expression," she sings a program of songs by Scandinavian composers who were fascinated by French Impressionism, and especially by Debussy, who greatly influenced them. Toivo Kula and his close friend Levi Madetja are said to be the composers who were most influenced by French Impressionism in Finland at the turn of the century.Kula's "Moonlit Boat Trip" is colored with a piano part reminiscent of Debussy's "Fountains" and "Reflections on Water," while Madetoya's "Windy Weather" depicts a spring breeze blowing over the frozen sea. Norwegians Alf Hulme and Pauline Halle also studied in Paris. Hulme, who was also a painter, created "The Meeting," a sound painting of romantic feelings, and Hull, who composed the "Verlaine Suite" for orchestra, composed two songs from Verlaine's poetry: "As the Rain Falls on the Street, So Do the Tears in My Heart" and "Autumn Song" from "For Violons on an Autumn Day. Swedish composer Josta Newström lived in Paris from 1920 to 1932. He composed many works with a "sea" motif, including his third symphony, which he named "Sinfonia del mare" (Symphony of the Sea), and "Songs by the Sea," a collection of songs composed for the Finnish soprano Aurikki-Rautavaara. From "On the Reef" by Ebba Lindqvist to "Waiting for the Moon to Rise" by Jalmar Gullberg, these works crystallize Nordic romanticism with a touch of French refinement and transparency. The program concludes with Debussy's "Three Songs on Poems by Paul Verlaine. Pianist Juho Alakaluppa graduated from the Sibelius Academy at the same time as Jätinen, and has collaborated with her for over a decade as an essential partner in her approach and understanding of music and poetry.
