This album is one of the complete piano sonatas by Claudio Santoro, who left behind 14 symphonies. The six piano sonatas, composed by Santoro over a 46-year period, document his musical evolution: Sonata 1942, a work from his early 20s, is in the lyrical style of his early years, but from the first sonata in 1945, he began using 12-tone technique and eventually developed into Brazilian nationalism. In No. 4, phrases that foreshadow bossa nova rhythms also appear, and his late No. 5 is a synthesis of the various expressive techniques he had used over the decades. This is the first recording of Santoro's complete piano sonatas, and the performer, Alessandro Santoro, is the composer's son. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Alessandro Santoro studied piano at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and later earned a master's degree in harpsichord at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he became a professor.He is currently Professor of Harpsichord and Passing Bass at the State Music School of São Paulo (EMESP). Since 1989 he has been editing and publishing his father's works and maintaining a virtual archive.
