These two piano quintets are just such music. The first was written in the transitional period from the middle to the late period, and although the boundaries are blurred, the melody line is firm (although of course the flow of sound surrounding it is ceaselessly fluid). In the second movement, written near the end of his life, the music becomes even more austere. The piano arpeggios are rippling, the sense of floating (hemiola) is created by the use of beats that are off the original time signature, and the tonality is blurred. It may take a little time for your ears to get used to it, but once you do, you will feel at ease, as if you were curled up in warm water.
