Description:

Aurora not waking up with a kiss in the surprising Shpook version of "Sleeping Beauty" by the Zurich Ballet! The true form of the wicked fairy Carabosse! Christian Spück is the artistic director of the Zurich Ballet. He succeeded Heinz Sperli as Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer of the Zurich Ballet in the 2012/13 season. He has choreographed many productions including "Romeo and Juliet" (ACC-10484BD/ACC-20484DVD) and "The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice" (ACC-10449BD/ACC-20449DVD), presenting classical works from a new perspective and captivating audiences with his unique expression, earning high praise. The new release is a new version of the choreography of the 20/20 series. This release features footage of "Sleeping Beauty" performed in June 2022. One of Tchaikovsky's three great ballets, "The Sleeping Beauty" tells the story of Princess Aurora, who has been asleep for 100 years, and Prince Desiree, who rescues her.In the regular version, a grand baptismal ceremony is held for the birth of Princess Aurora, and the wicked fairy Calabosse, who was not invited to the ceremony, becomes angry and places a curse on Aurora. In Spook's version, however, the story unfolds from a completely different perspective. The king and queen were unable to conceive a child. The queen, troubled by this, goes to the fairy world and kidnaps Princess Aurora before she is born in the human world. The kidnapped Aurora was a girl whom Karabosu had raised with great care in the fairy world. This is an astonishing setting. Based on the Petipa version, the Spook version focuses on the fate of the fairy Calabosse and depicts the fairy tale from a cynical and sensitive perspective, with universal themes such as human growth, the difficulties of becoming an adult, the struggles of parenthood, and love. And as shown in the jacket photo, Aurora is supposed to be awakened by Prince Desiree's kiss, but in Spook's version, Aurora does not wake up even after three kisses! What appears there is....In addition to the high quality dancing of dancers such as Michelle Willems' lovely yet strong core Aurora and William Moore who brilliantly danced Calabosse, who lives in a world of light and darkness while being tossed about by fate, the costumes and stage setting by the splendid production team led by Shpook are also highlights of the show.
