Symphony No. 2 is a masterful recording that was nominated for two Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Orchestral Recording and Best Recording Technique. When the recording was first released in Japan, \"Record Geijutsu\" magazine commented, \"The orchestra is well-balanced, and the smooth melody of Rachmaninoff is sung with a breathtakingly natural rubato\" (Tadao Koishi, reviewer of the performance). Slatkin re-recorded the Second Symphony with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra 30 years later.
