Description:

Thomas de Hartmann was born in Ukraine. He studied composition under Alensky, Taneyev, and Rimsky-Korsakov, and his ballet "The Red Flower" in 1907, performed by Nijinsky and Pavlova at the Imperial Opera House in St. Petersburg, impressed the then emperor so much that he was granted the right to study conducting in Munich and was exempted from military service. He was exempted from military service. He began his career as a composer and lived in France with his wife Olga for 18 years until 1940. He is known for his numerous dramatic and piano works, as well as for his collaborations with the writer and mystic Georgii Gurdjieff and the painter Vasily Kandinsky. The four works on this album were written during the "last 20 years of Hartmann's life," 45 years after he left his hometown. The rich artistic experiences Hartmann gained in St. Petersburg, Paris, and New York are reflected in the style of his compositions, and a sense of nostalgia is also evident. While the music is in the vein of late Romanticism, such as Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, the energetic percussion sounds heard in the "Andalusian Concerto" dedicated to Jean-Pierre Rampal show the influence of modernism similar to Stravinsky and Prokofiev. Enjoy the skillful performance by Ukrainian conductor Kuchar. The booklet of the original recording contains a detailed commentary in English by a Hartmann scholar. Naxos Japan
