Concerto di Margherita

Description:

The Madrigale, a much-loved genre of Italian court music around 1600, provided an opportunity to experiment with highly literate and complex and exquisite musical techniques. The genre has many interesting works from the transitional period when the polyphonic sound of the 16th century shifted to a baroque style centered on solo singing, and a variety of composers, old and new, from the late Netherlandish composers who found their way in Italy to Monteverdi, have written masterpieces in the genre. ARCANA has released an album that traces the changes of the times while uncompromisingly pursuing the truth of these masterpieces. The Concerto di Margherita (named after Margherita, Duchess of Mantova, who was the Princess of Mantova in Ferrara, where the most experimental music was being produced around 1600) is performed by a group of talented musicians from the Schola Cantorum of Basel, a group of outstanding musicians of ancient instruments, all of whom are both ancient instrumentalists and singers. The group is as dependable as during the Renaissance. The easy-to-hear pronunciation enhances the flavor of the lyrics without letting them be buried in the polyphony of voices, and the inclusion of string-repellent instruments from time to time highlights the interest of the madrigale to the fullest extent. The musicians' great technique and sense of style, which allow them to use the diminuzione (split ornamentation) technique derived from improvisation in a very natural way, allow the audience to enjoy a wide variety of Italian music from the late Renaissance to the birth of the Baroque period.
