Description:
The time is the reign of Emperor Justiniano (Justian) of the Byzantine Empire. Belisarius (Bersalius) is a great general who has won the Emperor's favor with his many military victories against the neighboring tribes. However, his wife Antonina, unable to forgive Belisarius for having caused the death of their newborn son by a revelation from a dream, accuses her husband of treason under false testimony. Sentenced to exile by the emperor's judges and blinded by the intrigues of his political enemies, Belisarius and his daughter Irene set out on a wandering journey... Based on the play "Belisarius" by Eduard von Schenck, which was inspired by the Byzantine general Belisarius. The tragedy "Belisarius" was written by Salvatore Cammarano and composed by Donizetti. Following the success of "Lucia di Lammermoor," it was premiered in 1836 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice with great success, and was performed in many cities in Europe and the U.S. It was not performed again until 1969, when it was revived at the Teatro La Fenice. The production will be staged in November 2020 at the Teatro del Duomo. This is a recording of the November 2020 performance at the Donizetti Opera House in Bergamo, Donizetti's birthplace, in a concert format with no audience.Roberto Frontali sings the title role with great dignity, Carmela Remigio beautifully expresses Antonina's struggle with hatred and regret, Annalisa Stroppa impresses with her refined expression as the spirited Irene, and Celso Albero plays Ramiro, a tenor with a brilliantly beautiful voice. The dramatic music, under the baton of Italian opera master Riccardo Frizza, well known to Japanese audiences for his many guest appearances at the New National Opera, responds beautifully to the singing of these singers.
