Description:

To the source of French violin art! A masterful recording by Café Zimmermann, this is an album of works by Leclerc, one of the great violinists of the first half of the 18th century in France, with a French-speaking player of ancient instruments taking the time to explore their charms. At the beginning of the 18th century, when Italian violin music in the vein of Corelli and Vivaldi was very popular throughout Europe, Leclerc absorbed the southern style and combined it with various styles unique to France, contributing greatly to the establishment of a string music style unique to this country. Plantier, who plays here with great virtuosity, was the soloist in many famous recordings, first with Ensemble 415 and later with Café Zimmermann, and is now making his presence felt as the leader of ensembles such as Les Plaisirs du Parnassus and Duo Tartini. He has selected five pieces that show the history of Leclerc's artistic development from the beginning to the end of his career. From "Volume 2," which retains a trace of Corelli's style, to "Volume 4," which has the fragrance of the Rococo period, the composer's characteristic ornaments and heavy notes are played with great brilliance, and the listener can hear how Italian diction is fused with French wit and firmness of line. The commentary by Plantier himself, with his multifaceted insights, makes this a work of art by an authentic baroque violinist in the vein of Arcana's Gatti, Channel Classics' Podger, and Audax's Plamzoller.
