Description:

Courtesy of the Institut National de l'Audiovisual (INA), France. The first ever recording of Schelling's Doppelkoncerto with Novello! The first recording of Ponce, Schelling's favorite player, is also very rare! Spectrum Sound's popular "Bellarm" series. The new CD release of the highly-anticipated first-ever recordings of the Bach & Mozart (recorded in 1971) and Ponce (recorded in 1960) concertos that Schelling performed in Paris! Born in Poland, Henrik Schelling (1918-1988) is an orthodox violinist who became a Mexican citizen in 1946 and has been active worldwide since then. The Bach Doppelkoncerts were recorded twice on the Philips label in 1965 and 1976, and this performance is a live performance from December 1971, which falls right in between the two. This is a live performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 with Schelling playing. The Doppel Concerto was performed with the violinist and conductor Ermelo Novello (1930-1983), one of the most famous Mexican violinists of the 20th century. Novello's mother, who lost her father when she was a child but discovered her talent on the violin, moved with her children to Mexico City, where she was a struggling musician. He received a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied with such renowned violin pedagogues as Louis Persinger (1887-1966) and Ivan Galamian (1903-1981). He also studied conducting under Serge Celibidacke (1912-1996) and Leon Balzan (1900-1999). Novello's violin sings freely. He sometimes swings the tempo and enjoys playing Bach with Schelling. As in 1969, they play a cadenza by Sam Franco. The Mozart is accurate and graceful, and the performance is a masterpiece of Schelling. Schelling is a master. The violin concerto by Manuel Ponce was dedicated to Schelling. This is Ponce's masterpiece and Schelling's favorite piece, which he played all his life, although he never recorded it for Philips, Mercury, or DG. Ponset studied in Italy and Germany, and in France under Paul Ducasse (1865-1935), and developed his own style, influenced by modern French music. The solo violin performance, reminiscent of Szymanowski's, with its high E line and heavy notes, and its colorful interplay with the orchestra, is truly fascinating. The performance is supported by Carlos Chavez, the famous Mexican conductor, who gives a magnificent performance. The live performance is a passionate performance that conveys Schelling's greatness! Japanese obi and commentary are not included. King International
