The third album "Licorice", released on Secretly Canadian, is more sincere, uninhibited, and fully expresses his true self.

Produced by Jay Som (Melina Duterte), mixed by Alex Farrar (Wendesday, MJ Lenderman)

Hatchie, a project by Australian singer-songwriter Harriette Pilbeam, will release her new album "Liquorice" on Secretly Canadian.

In collaboration with producer Melina Duterte (aka Jay Som), Hatchie has created a more sincere, uninhibited, and fully realized expression of her true self. The album vividly illustrates how longing and obsession are intertwined in a young woman's self-discovery.

This album is the culmination of what I've wanted to do since the beginning of this project. Inspired by my favorite tragico-romance movies (romances in which a loving relationship ultimately comes to a tragic, sad, or unhappy end), I painstakingly depicted the trajectory of love in every detail. I have never felt so much empathy for an album. I can't wait to share this experience with everyone," says Hatchie.

The cover of "Liquorice" features a close-up of a laughing Harriette Pilbeam. Her red lipstick is smudged, evoking the glorious afterglow of a kiss. Taken impromptu in a backyard with a small digital camera, the photos capture the essence of the album's rough-hewn but joyfully unleashed themes of longing, desire, and regret. After a long stint in Los Angeles, Pilbeam and bandmate and longtime collaborator Joe Agius decided to take a break from touring and return to Australia. There, Pilbeam reassessed his priorities and focused on his relationships with friends and family.

Ultimately," she says, "the inspiration for this album came from living a very simple life, reconnecting with myself, and having time alone to think. Liquorice" reflects a woman who is slowly getting used to being who she is and no longer feels pressured to try to fit into a box or prove herself.

Pilbeam lived in Brisbane from 2022 to 2023, and then began work on Liquorice in earnest while living with Agius in Melbourne. Pilbeam has been open about his musical influences in the past, but this time he worked on the songs from scratch, with no specific musical influences in mind. Instead of rushing through ideas, he allowed the songs to mature slowly over a period of weeks. He was drawn to the melodic simplicity of the early songs and embraced his musical insecurities. Says she, "I wanted to see my limitations as strengths that would shape my style."

Recorded in Duterte's home studio with Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Courtney Barnett) on drums, Liquorice was mixed by Alex Farrar (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman), Greg Obis (Dutch Interior, Slow Pulp, Wishy) mastered the album.
Tracklisting:

1.Anemoia2.Only One Laughing3.Liquorice4.Carousel5.Sage6.Someone Else's News7.Wonder8.Lose It Again9.Anchor10.Part That Bleeds11.Stuck
1.Anemoia
2.Only One Laughing
3.Liquorice
4.Carousel
5.Sage
6.Someone Else's News
7.Wonder
8.Lose It Again
9.Anchor
10.Part That Bleeds
11.Stuck
