Masked rapper MF Doom pioneered the possibilities of alternative hip-hop and became an underground legend. Before MF Doom donned the mask and became one of the most prolific MCs/producers in modern hip-hop, he was a member of the early '90s rap group KMD. After their debut album, Mr. Hood, the trio lost one member, leaving only Subroc and his brother, Zev Love X (now known as MF DOOM). Their second album, Black Bastards, originally scheduled for release in 1994, showed clear progress from their debut. Both sonically and lyrically, it was a wonderful album, full of youthful creativity and the stresses of growing up black in urban America. Sadly, Subroc passed away suddenly in 1993, near the album's completion.In his grief, Zev Love X was determined to carry on KMD's legacy, but Elektra Records shelved the project at the last minute because of the controversial album cover. but only reached a dead end. The pain of losing his brother combined with the inability to release their last project together caused a despondent Zev to quietly step away from the scene and quietly begin plotting his revenge on the industry that had mentally destroyed him.
