Xu Xiaomei's masterpieces are now available in a CD box! Xu Xiaomei, a Chinese pianist based in Europe, has overcome the Cultural Revolution and paved a new path. Her Bach performances, including the Golteberg Variations, which are her specialty, are created from her precise compositional skills and refined expressiveness, and the music is purely audible and resonates with the listener. The first disc, Scarlatti, is a live recording of a concert in Prague in November 1995. Scarlatti moved to Spain and composed most of these 555 sonatas there, and many of the works show the influence of the music of the Iberian Peninsula and Spain, which has a strong ethnic flavor. This recording is rich in shadows, with her particular selection and order of music, and evokes the shadows created by the strong sunlight. The second disc is Haydn, the composer she most admired and even called her lifelong companion. Here we have more than 60 Haydn sonatas, including musically rich works from the middle and late periods, with melancholy variations in between. The last of these, Piano Sonata No. 62, is a work of great musicality and technical complexity. Xu Xiaomei's deep musicality highlights the richness and beauty of the work. And the third piece is Mozart. The first piece is "Variations on a Twinkling Star," which starts at a fast tempo, followed by the innocent "Sonata in C major," the unfinished "Fantasy," the "Adagio in B minor," which is rare for Mozart, and the cello player Variations" based on the work of cellist Jean-Pierre Dupaul, Mozart's last piano sonata "K576 in D major", and "Andante" for automatic organ composed in the year of his death.Xu Xiaomei's refined tone, resonance, dignified and intelligent playing, and profound musicality beautifully portray the transparency of Mozart's last years, and the fourth disc includes Beethoven and Schubert, the last sonatas of the two great musicians. The contrast between the strong, tense fortissimo and the desolate pianissimo sound is stirring, and once again Xu Xiaomei's rich expressive power is overwhelming in this masterful performance. The fifth and final piece is Schumann, whom I respect as a poetic musician. It includes two dramatic pieces, "Children's Scenes" and "David's Alliance Dances," which evoke her checkered life at the mercy of the times. The contrast between the dramatic, intense expression and the warm, lyrical expression is enchanting to listen to in this performance. King International
