Abel, who lived during the transition from Baroque to Classical music, was the last master of the viola da gamba, which gradually became an instrument of the past. He also is known as the founder of the Bach-Abel Concerts, a modern public subscription concert series with J.C. Bach. 46 symphonies remain, and this disc contains his later works. The symphonies are small, about 15 minutes each, in three rapid and slow movements, but they are full of wit and joy, and have a world that is similar to that of Haydn. The Concerto Symphony, in which the soloists sing beautifully together, is also a masterpiece for the ear. The Main Baroque Orchestra, under the direction of concertmaster and conductor Martin Jopp, has been performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries for more than 25 years and has earned an international reputation. The recording also features the viola player Yuichi Yazaki, who plays with the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras in Europe.
