Description:
A beautiful and thrilling musical competition that brings to mind a moment when musicians were competing for the top position! When Johann Kuhnau died in 1722, a number of musicians came forward to take his place. The city council's first choice was Telemann, the most famous and popular composer of the time, but he declined because he was offered a better position in Hamburg. Fasch and Graupner were next on the list, but Fasch withdrew after learning of Telemann's entry, and Graupner withdrew again after his employer, the Duke of Hesse, refused to part with him. Bach was appointed to this position in 1723, beginning the "Leipzig era" that lasted until his death in 1750. Stefan Temming, born in Cape Town in 1978, is a recorder player. His numerous releases are highly acclaimed for their brilliant technique, and he has made a name for himself in recent years. The theme of "Leipzig 1723" is the thrilling moment in the history of music, the Thomas Cantor War, and features works by four of the players concerned. The musicians engage in a heated exchange of ideas through a single instrument, the recorder. Although many of the pieces are in F major, which has a pastoral image, the music is rich and full, and the album is a perfect example of 18th-century German recorder art. The harpsichord of Sebastian Wienant, who also plays in the Freiburg Baroque and Bee Rock Orchestras, is a must-hear. King International
