A 17-CD limited edition box set of the Command recordings by William Steinberg (1899-1978), a German conductor of Jewish descent who worked in the U.S. after World War II, is being released for the first time on Command Classics. 17-CD box set. Limited edition. Steinberg became Otto Klemperer's assistant in his native Cologne and then chief conductor after Klemperer's departure; he left Germany in 1936 to found and conduct the Palestine Symphony Orchestra (later the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra). It was there that Steinberg was discovered by Arturo Toscanini, and in the United States he met the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which launched his formidable career. He went on to make the orchestra one of the most interesting of its era. The set includes symphonic ticles by Beethoven and Brahms, as well as works by Schubert, Wagner, Bruckner, and Tchaikovsky performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.All recordings were made at the renowned Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Remastered from the original master tapes, these 11 albums are now available on CD for the first time, with a 48-page booklet featuring a new essay by Richard Evidon. In the original jacket.
