String Quartet No. 4 was subsequently composed in 1936, while he was living in Paris after leaving Germany. It uses one of Fittelberg's favorite forms, the theme and variations, and includes seven variations between the theme and the final fugue. The following String Quartet No. 5 was composed in New York in 1945, after he left Paris in 1940 for exile in the United States. The opening Allegro is followed by five variations, and although it was composed with the same concept as No. 4, it concludes not with a fugue but with a long vivace.
