His talent was so highly regarded at the time that he published works for organ, and he went on to compose choral music and art songs as well. From 1903 to 1909, he held the position of second organist at a Lutheran church, and from 1928 onward, he served as a professor of music theory in Leipzig. His music was literally buried underground during World War II—it is said he hid his own scores under the floor of his garden to escape attacks by the Russian army—but was safely recovered by his son after the war ended. Oppel’s music is quite complex and enigmatic, with a flavor reminiscent of late Romantic sounds made even more rich and velvety. Perhaps it’s more about enjoying the flow of the music than its beauty?
